Place Your Bets on Roulette - A Brand New Whisky From The Makers Of Paul John
The latest spirit from Goa blends a classic with the unexpected
In a typical game of Roulette, a croupier spins the numbered wheel in one direction and a ball in the other until the ball lands on a number. If you're lucky, it's the number you placed your bets on. But the essence of the game lies in the short moment of waiting with bated breath to see if your risk paid off. John Distilleries' new whisky, named Roulette after the game, embraces this idea of risk to bring bold new flavours into the well-loved beverage.
Bengaluru-based John Distilleries has been creating single malts, fine whiskies and wines since 1996. Their Paul John Bold single malt whisky won the gold medal at the Wizards of Whisky awards in 2017 and the Classic Select Cask won a gold in the Indian Single Malt category at the World Whisky Awards in 2021. Their latest offering came into being early in 2021 in the sunny state of Goa. They wanted to create a whisky with an extraordinarily smooth blend and just a touch of smokiness that lingers even after the last sip.
Created from a combination of high quality grain and peated malt spirit, the whisky is matured in American oak casks. The packaging is reminiscent of a traditional bourbon cask, with motifs of a roulette speaking to the unexpected flavours of the beverage.
What does it taste like?
The whisky has notes of fruit and honey with a dash of smoky malt. On the palate, deep creamy flavours of vanilla are followed by a hint of fruitiness. The American oak casks give it a rich smokiness that will take you by surprise. Enjoy the drink neat or as a highball.
Roulette is available in Goa, with plans for it to be launched in Maharashtra and Assam. Rs 1,500.
